Rudy hangs in; Times may help, too

Recent polls suggest the GOP Florida primary is a two-man race between John McCain and Mitt Romney. But Rudy Giuliani showed last night why reports of his death are premature - and maybe wrong.

Giuliani, in a political funk for the past two months, put on a solid performance to keep his hopes alive. While he wasn't spectacular or dramatic, he was comfortable, forceful and precise with his answers. He was as good on the economy, immigration and the danger of Islamic terror as McCain and Romney.

What might have given him an edge in many voters' eyes was a curious question from moderator Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News. In asking Giuliani to defend himself against a vicious editorial in today's New York Times that denounces the former mayor, Williams inadvertently made the brusque Giuliani a sympathetic figure.
