"I'm going to work with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to sign up counties who have their own correctional facilities," said State Assemblyman Greg Ball, R-Carmel.
On Feb. 6, the Danbury Common Council gave Police Chief Al Baker authorization to enroll in the ICE ACCESS/287(g) program.
Danbury will become the first municipality in Connecticut to enroll in the program, assuming ICE approves the city's application.
Danbury officials have said the city will be sending two or three detectives to receive the training.
Ball, however, thinks it is more effective to start a New York jail house program, where the names of suspected illegal immigrants would be screened using a federal database.
